In 2006, Salisbury University kicked off an ambitious fundraising campaign, hoping to raise $25 million to help support its academic programs, campus facilities and improvements and community outreach, and scholarship funding. Six years later, at its conclusion, that campaign has amassed more than anyone imagined possible --nearly $40 million in all.

  3. Super PACs evoking buyer's remorse

FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. -- Dina Galassini does not seem to pose a threat to Arizona's civic integrity. But the government of this desert community believes you cannot be too careful. And state law empowers local governments to be vigilant against the lurking danger that political speech might occur before the speakers notify the government and comply with all the speech rules.

  4. Romney's boneheaded words reflect misunderstanding

The problem with Mitt Romney's latest boneheaded statement -- "I'm not concerned about the very poor" -- isn't the ammunition it gives political opponents eager to yank the candidate's words out of context.

  5. Delegate Mike McDermott, right, is one of 19 members of Maryland 's House of Delegates sponsoring a bi-partisan bill to extend the statute of limitations on possession of child pornography and make it easier for prosecutors and police to build solid cases against offenders. FILE

Our View: Bipartisan bill would help prosecutors nail offenders

Delegate Mike McDermott, R-38B, is one of 19 Maryland House members -- 14 Democrats and five Republicans --who is sponsoring a bill that would give law enforcement a break in preparing to prosecute misdemeanor child pornography cases. Maryland law now requires that charges must be filed in such cases no more than 12 months after the offense is committed. This is often a problem for several reasons.

Our View: Schools Funding cuts are daunting

The Wicomico County school board is weighing options for spending reductions in a system that has seen funding reduced to levels that predate the Thornton Commission's 2002 recommendations to provide a more equitable level of funding across Maryland's 23 counties plus Baltimore City.

There's been a heap of criticism placed upon President Barack Obama's domestic policies that have promoted government intrusion and prolonged our fiscal crisis and his foreign policies that have emboldened our enemies. Bay cleanup getting costly

The Chesapeake Bay dominates much of life on the Eastern Shore, often indirectly. Shore residents and businesses need clean water for the usual purposes --drinking, bathing, irrigation of lawns and crops, for example. Such water comes from underground aquifers. But seafood, fishing and tourism industries also rely on healthy waterways crisscrossing the Delmarva Peninsula, as well as the condition of the bay itself.

I just got a letter from Delegate Patrick McDonough, who should have been our governor. He informed me what liberal Democrat Gov. Martin O'Malley is up to. He plans on hitting us with: A 15-cent per gallon gasoline tax hike, a 200 percent increase in the flush tax, a proposed corporate tax increase, a general attack on exemptions like the family mortgage tax deduction, a possible state property tax hike, a sales on services tax increase and has proposed $500 million in new spending programs.

Our View: Maryland's family farms are worth preserving

the highly partisan Maryland General Assembly, it's a rarity when a piece of legislation seems to win broad-based support. Even when a measure is an obviously good idea, there are still forces that seemingly demand its destruction. Part of that is the system that demands checks and balances; part of that is the culture of politics that trumpets petty differences.

I was proud to hear the president lay out a blueprint for the country to renew our American values. I believe he clearly proposed his vision to promote economic fairness for all the people. Our View: Arsenic in feed merits federal ruling

The issue of arsenic used in poultry feed has arisen again in the 2012 Maryland legislative session with introduction of HB 167 and its companion in the state Senate, SB 207. Similar bills in past years have not become law. The Maryland legislation would prohibit a person from using, selling or distributing for use as food for poultry any commercial feed containing roxarsone or other additive containing arsenic.
