Opinion: Foster collaboration, not divisiveness, in Dewey Beach

Lawsuit raises questions,but answers are needed

The community of Dewey Beach on the Delaware shore finds itself in court, sued by a leading owner of tourism-related businesses over the town's business license fees.

In short, restaurant and nightclub owner Alex Pires argues the fees are being used to fund local government instead of covering simply the costs of an inspection of businesses. That's a tax, not a fee, and it should be declared not legal with businesses getting a refund going back six years, Pires' lawsuit states.

For its part, Dewey Beach defends the business license fees, calling them fair. ...
