Robert Hughes: Liars and politicians mislead us with figures

Re: "Failure to act will exact a heavy toll on millions," Feb. 22

I had an accounting professor who was fond of saying "figures don't lie, but liars do figure."

Sen. Ben Cardin's recent column is a perfect example of this, filled with half-truths and obfuscation, distortion and outright lies - all for the purpose of scaring people into blaming Republicans as obstructionists and allowing Democrats to spend and waste more of the taxpayers' hard-earned money.
