President Obama has asked that public schools provide accommodations that allow students with disabilities to participate in regular athletic programs. When that is not possible, the schools are to provide parallel teams of comparable standing. Maryland has been doing this since 2008.

President Barack Obama has made it clear he wants public school students to be given a fair shot at playing on traditional sports teams or, if that is not feasible, parallel programs should be created that hold comparable standing to the traditional sports programs. Thus, in January, Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced new guidance on Jan. 25 explaining how these equal opportunities would be established.
