As difficult as it might seem now, the only thing matching the tragedy of the Sandy Hook shooting is its improbability. In a system of 55 million school children, only five per year will be a victim of gun violence (barring suicides) - a surprising considering the gun used at Sandy Hook was a Bushmaster semiautomatic rifle. There are millions of functionally equivalent firearms in this country.
By comparison, hundreds of children will die this year because of such things as swimming pools, household cleaners and bicycles. Yet the bleeding hearts aren't screaming for a ban on pools or bicycles ...
